In the seventy-first year of her religious life
Age: 87 years, 3 months, 27 days

Once upon a time...

There lived in the Hill District of Pittsburgh a girl named Emilina Marchetti, born to her parents Agostino and Natalina Marchetti, their second child. Entering school, Emilina was taught by women who impressed her so much she set out to imitate them, the Sisters of Divine Providence. She became one of them and was called Sr. Natalie Marchetti.

Now as an educator and religious woman Sr. Natalie served in various parishes and the Alpha School, all the while developing a spirituality as she lived with her sisters in community (which she called her family).

And so God, to her, became a Provident Father with her favorite scripture quotes:

“To act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with God” Micah 6:8 and “Visibly do I see in all things the wonderful Providence of God.” Mother Marie de La Roche

Then, all of a sudden, as things sometimes happen in our lives, an unusual circumstance presented itself to Sr. Natalie: “Come pack up your trunk, baggage and all and come to the Motherhouse and stay at the Novitiate.” And again, “Sr. Natalie, you will go to Rome and serve at the Generalate.” There she utilized the DNA gifts of her Italian parents, which served her well in that country.

Still another adventure awaited her: “You will go to Korea and impart to these adventurous women the charism and spirit of our founder, Bishop William Emmanuel von Ketteler and our foundress Marie de la Roche.” Accordingly, Sr. Natalie accepted the challenge of entering into a totally new culture, language and human experience. Thus, she enabled the gift of a new foundation, St. Joseph Province, to take root and to grow changing her life and ours too. Providence knows no bounds, so we are united with our Sisters in Korea each day in prayer and in service to those in our care.

Returning to the States and being in transition, Sr. Natalie was self-giving and flexible to serve in any capacity asked of her. She was privileged to become a care giver to her mother, a time close to her heart.

Having grown now in grace, wisdom and self-knowledge, Sr. Natalie gave her many talents to the Community she loved and served as a sacristan in her last years. She not only served us and our chaplain, Fr. Greg Swiderski, in every detail for the liturgy in season and out, she was a courageous woman to be present to others with a compassionate heart and loyal friendship not to be forgotten.

Yes, the Sisters of Divine Providence have found in her a valiant woman, indeed!
